Ooohhh I love the Witchcraft!!! :)
For about 20 minutes in the middle of today's session I was having one of
my best periods of sailing arguably...ever... The W80 is a waveriding
orgasmatron!!! Even in mushy cross-on (albeit with a fair sized swell) she
just loved going down the line clew first, refused to stall, and
then...oh...the top turn... Some of today's hacks were truely amazing and
made me feel like a waaay better sailor than I really am. On one topper I
fully slid the tail out completely by surprise as I slashed round, only for
the fins to re-engage straight away and spin me back onto the wave for
another go! I thought only the pros could do that??? But this was one of
many incredible top-turn experiences...oh the feeling of the tri-fins
gripping the wave and then shooting you off the top...aaahhh...where's the
kleenex... ;)
So with this waveriding orgasmatron under my feet even an average windy
cross-on south coast session was transformed into a proper
hunt-the-dtl-fest. For the first time I found myself really going for the
onshore frontside riding since I'd never been on a board like this that
just will not stall no matter how long you hold it clew-first. Occasionally
I was even stopping out the back so that I could wait for the decent swell
lines to come through - something I've only ever really done at Moulay
before. It's definitely made me think twice about what I want from a
waveboard now since I never thought that going for the waveriding in such
mushy onshore conditions could be so much fun.
Unfortunately this was a "sandwich" session because the juicy filling was
surrounded by two 30 minute periods of shit. At the start I was sailing
like an utter muppet as I'd temporarily forgotten how to gybe. I worked out
what I was doing wrong and then the W80 responded by shooting me out of
many of the turns fully planing...until the last half-hour when the wind
really picked up and I was so overpowered (and knackered) that despite my
best efforts sailing stopped becoming enjoyable.
Bizarrely I was the only person on the water for the first hour. I had
timed the session just right though - sod all wind in the morning whilst I
was at work, but the forecast was good so I took a chance which paid off.
(nothing when I left work 1pm...solid 5.2 weather when I arrived at the
beach 2pm). A shame that crappy bits surrounded the quality middle period
since at one point I was seriously considering whether I would have to
award this session 5 stars. But a 4 starrer must never be sniffed at,
especially when it's the third waveboard session in 3 days... :)
